“Connecting with people and celebrating life – that is what my art is about.”
Julian van Mossel-Forrester has been studying and practising art in various forms since 1992, including studying Fine Art and Environmental Studies at the University of Waterloo. Julian has been based in the Waterloo Region area for the past 18 years.
Recent art projects include drawings for the Kitchener Colour My ‘Hood adult colouring book and a solo painting exhibition at the Queen Street Commons Café, Kitchener. Aside from painting and drawing, Julian also teaches art to adults and children, and is a graphic designer and web designer.
Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Julian’s recent work focuses on themes close to his heart and community life. These have included a series based on musicians and their instruments, a series based on vegetables grown by a local organic farmer, and a body of work inspired by the KW Lantern Walk that he is involved with. This work has ultimately been about connecting with people and celebrating life.
Julian’s application of paint is spontaneous and playful, fragmenting the surface of the canvas, always in response to close observation of the subject.
There is no right or wrong.
There is only observation and response, then reworking the image, layer after layer, with an adventurous use of colours such as bright orange, pink, maroon red, and minty green. Julian chooses explosive colours, abstracted from the literal appearance of the subject, yet through colour combinations he finds a sense of wholeness and depth.
